They didn't have my level which was standard B2 instead they had B1 to B2 and B2 to C1 due to lack of students. Because I speak very well by living in France a year before I was put in the top group but when it came to writing I was rubbish and all the grammar we were learning was too complex for me because I had never really practised French writing at an advanced level, so normally I didn't learn anything apart from new vocab (which you can get through anything).
But the price is decent and some of the teachers are very good and some are too old school which didn't work for me. The main thing is to stop the class when you don't get something. I noticed that sometimes, I would stop the class and everyone was writing so that means people are afraid to stop the class when they don't know something. But listen you're paying the money and the teachers are open to that so try not to be bothered you will never see these people again anyways. But if you don't look over your notes and do extra then you're wasting your time, you need to be 100% devoted to learning French and do more outside of the Institut, talk to people who sit by themselves, listen to podcasts when you walk, pick up a French book. When you are in the French environment you notice that you have a lot more motivation because you are in the French environment.
The setup was basic and the teaching methods boring 70-85% of the time. I have been a teacher for many years so perhaps I notice the missed opportunities to make the learning more effective than someone who has never taught before. There should be trained on how to engage students more. I taught English at a very innovate institute in Vietnam and was trained to allow students to engage with each other and my role was to be the guide. Ariane demanded a lot of attention and seemed confused a lot about what she was going to do next. She was often under prepared with materials. Sylviane was the calmest and most prepared of the three instructors and Ailine the sternest and, like Ariene, controlling of how students communicate with each other.
I skipped a few of Arien's classes as she did not seem to be comfortable around me and showed quite a bit of preferential treatment with other students. The criticized and sometimes ignored what I said and would praise certain people and even appreqred to seek the approval of some students. She is a pretty insecure woman and tries to be confident when she isn't. Ailine comes off as intimidating but when you show hr you're serious about learning, she is a bit nicer but not everyone can take Her initial coldness and I even tried to change teachers but Slyviane advised me to give her another try.
Sylviane was the most engaging and I felt comfortable speaking in her class and the conversations we had were interesting and thought provoking. She was respectful with her feedback and had good energy. So did Johan and the substitutes who covered the class when Ariane went on vacation.
The instruction can use a serious upgrade when it comes the the instruction style but overall all I can say I learned enough to make it worth the visit. Also Lyon is a lovely And diverse city and I am happy with my choice of location.
My host family had a beautiful home but the wife, Floence, had control issues. She would chastise me as if I was her 5 year old son's age and even after explaining something she didn't like and I didn't know beforehand she had an issue with (I.e. cooking food) she would complain to Johan. I got tired of the growing hostility and the defamation of my character to the school so I requested a new arrangement. I was trying hard to stay positive living with Florence, but she seemed to not want me in her house and neither her mother nor her husband could figure out why. I like to exercise and shared that in common with her husband so perhaps she felt threatened by me. Only Florence knows what the function behind her behavior was but I do not recommend anyone young woman who is attractive to stay in her house.
Every room should come with a fan. The rooms are unnaturally hot and hold a lot of heat even with the windows wide open. A recycling program would be great for the school of the accommodation to setup to allow students to leave things for the next person to use. That was a suggestion I made to Johan.
I enjoyed my class and private lesson experiences with the Institut Lyonnais. The teachers rotate during the week so you get to try different styles. They had good materials and interesting lessons that kept the attention of the class. We were 6 in my class, and I didn't see any classes larger than that. That meant a lot of time to practice speaking, and enough people to engage with on exercises. Really fun. The private lesson was, if anything, even better - the teacher quickly picked up on my level and my interests and brought in appropriate reading to spark discussion. If you wanted something completely specific like for some industry, I'm sure they could do that too.
At another institute they had had social evening activities - that was the only thing I would have liked to have seen here.
-lessons began always with a delay and breaks were longer than in the plan. I lost every day about 30 minutes for which I actually paid. I was disappointed and I wanted to quit the course. Finally, I decided to stay after a meeting with the director of Institut Lyonnais.
- I had to ask every day for a copy of the book, because the materials were never prepared
-One of the teachers (Alina) was really not nice for students, she screamed sometimes and she laughed at the students. Unfortunately, she never explained new issues, in her opinion we should have known all the grammar before.
The activities were boring for example during 2 hours we read 3 pages of a text and we didn't do anything else
It was horrible for me...
-Fortunately, I met great people and I had a very rich social life. Therefore I have very good memories of my stay in Lyon, but unfortunately not of this school.
It was very good experience for me . I hoe again i gonna have chance to parcitpate this courseToon details » lees meer...
Very nice school, great location and very friendly teachers. Overall a very nice experience.
I would like to come back someday
The classes were well organized, however some students may have felt intimidated at times. It's important to encourage students by helping them understand new concepts and sharing knowledge as a professor. In my opinion a professor has the duty to gauge the students' knowledge and adept to them as well as find and implement teaching methods that are fit for the current pupils which should be possible when the institute has the advantage of having small classrooms and often individual lessons.
The location was great.
The facilities were OK. There was wi-fi which was good, but the building is old, out-dated and very hot! It could use better ventilation!
This school is very small but for practicing language, it's a perfect place. The teachers were very good, you can ask anything you want and anything that you didn't understand. We talked a lot and this helped to learn a language faster.
I stayed for two months with the family of Doriane Gauthier, great woman, great person with nice apartment and cute cat. She cooked every day something tasty and special, it was really good time.
1. If you want to study French its better to change the school after 2-3 month for more experience, because having same teachers, same people can't give you more.
2. It's very expensive
3. Sometimes the WiFi in the school is not working
Lyon is very beautiful city, if you come, you will fall in love with it.
Classes : They were interesting and I did a learn a lot of new things. The teachers were talking a lot and this was great for me, since I decided to go to France mostly in order to improve my listening. I just would like a bigger focus on the everyday life of the French people.
Teachers : I had two of them. The first one (Sylviane) was great. She was very friendly and we had a lot of discussions about many interesting subjects. The second one (Aline) was awful. She was constantly making fun of the students and she was very rude.
Location : The Institut is located next to the river Rhone and it is easily accessible by tram and subway.
Facilities : The classrooms were a bit noisy. Sometimes it was really hard to hear what the teachers were saying.
Activities : There were no activities other than teaching.
Housing : The house was clean and the owners were helpful. What I didn't like was that they weren't talking too much and sometimes they seemed bored when I was asking them questions. The owner was also a bit moody.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend the Institut to other students, unless there are some improvements (more quiet classrooms, better attitude etc.).
We had small class size, good teacher, nice location and excellent home-stay family.Toon details » lees meer...
The experience of taking a language class in another country with many students from around the world is invaluable. The skill required to make students of different ages and cultures is also notable. The teachers at this school are well skilled and make all students comfortable and display an ability to determine individual needs despite limited resources and great demands. While each lesson was planned there was not always a logical and helpful scope and sequence of language learning.Toon details » lees meer...
Good teachers and staff. Location is excellent. Facilities were not good, bathrooms were horrible and also the working material. There were no outside activities organized by the school, but some teachers arranged some with the students by themselves. Organization of the classes were also terrible because most of the time we used to have more than 20 students in the same class. Which is impossible for the students and also for the teachers to have an effective lesson.Toon details » lees meer...
I liked the teachers and the receptionist they were very helpful
I didn't like the the classes, it's always hot and they didn't turn on the air conditioner. They didn't have cafeteria food, so you should go out of the institute and walk about 150 meters to get food.
The teachers in general were good. Some were better than others .
The staff in the reception area was very nice. The location of the school, in relation to the dorm was comfortable.
The dorm is very good, quiet and fairly clean. The heating system is good. I liked the residence.
I was in Lyon for one month to follow classes at Lyonnais.
I had a nice time, but it was not as good as I expected.
The reason for this was that I think the way they teach is very old fashion.
The teacher talks, the students listen. Sometimes there is minimal conversation.
But they don't do anything in student-group-work, they don't do anything with IT/social-media.
The teachers were very friendly but not all were very good.
The reason that I say this is because one of them seems to have a kind of a 'contact-problem'. After everything he is saying, he says: 'hmm oui oui d'accord'. That was really strange. Also when he gave an exercise, he'll just tell us what was wrong, but does not explain why it was wrong or how to improve.
I also really missed the conversations and the homework. There was no high pressure from school to improve myself.
The accommodation is very old. The rooms are very cold or very hot. A lot of seats are broken or uncomfortable. The rooms don't look special.
The location is good. Its really in the center of Lyon.
The housing (residence Andre Allix) was fine. I had a good room.
Although, the kitchen and toilet's were really horrible (dirty!).
The people at the reception were not very friendly or helpful.
Also, there were no French students. So it was difficult to meet new French people.
For my English it was good. But that was not the reason of my stay in Lyon.
I was on an intensive course for 6 weeks, and it was a really good experience. The teachers were really good, nice and helpful. I stayed at a student residence called Andre Allix. It was a bit tiny but really cheap and pretty good for the price. In total, I'm really happy that I chose this facility.Toon details » lees meer...
The sincere attitude in this school is real. All the staff here are really willing to help, very professional, polite and just positive. I felt very comfortable. Earlier, when I was at home, I doubted whether I felt comfortable at Institut Lyonnais, but now I can relax and confirm that I was in the right place and I never regretted my choice.
Regarding the teachers, they were super. They had their own personalities with their own manners of teaching. More than that, they demonstrated their tremendous love towards the French language, which I adored.
I would say that the location was good. It was situated practically on the bank of the river and the view was nice and romantic. As I lived with a French family, I needed to share my opinion on this as well. I was absolutely lucky with my accommodation with this family. They were really cool and I felt much warmth with them, because they were really nice, descent, and kind people who were eager to speak French to me as often as they could. I really appreciated it all - their care, attention, friendship, and of course their cooking which was fantastic! (La cuisine francaise est excellente, c'est vrai!)
Aside from these, I liked very much the secretaries (persons at receptionist's desk) for their attention, care and understanding. I felt much sympathy with them.
Summarizing everything, I would like to say much thanks to my coordinator Illiana Pistolli for her contribution to this life experience. I really appreciate everything.
The teachers were really nice and kind. I was also quite satisfied with my host family. I improved my language skill though the duration was short.Toon details » lees meer...
